Properly placing your unsubscribe link
Even the best, permission-based e-mail marketers get marked as spam occasionally. It is not a matter of If, it is a matter of when. It is going to be a constant battle between senders and receivers but there is always something that you can do to get through. There is one very simple design trick that will greatly improve your odds of getting your newsletter to be delivered.
…try moving your unsubscribe link to the top of your email…
If you’re using older lists or if you just changed providers, the majority of your subscribers may have forgotten about your newsletter. Unfortunately, when this happens they may begin to click the spam button when they receive your email. If this happens often, the email servers will begin to reject all e-mails from that IP address. Being blocked is frustrating, but typically ISP’s and email providers do so only for a limited time. In order to be successful in the future you need to make some minor changes to your emails.
The most significant design change that you can make to your newsletter would be to move the unsubscribe link to the top of the newsletter. This makes it much easier for subscribers to unsubscribe instead of clicking on the spam button in their email client. Statistics have shown that 80% of your subscribers that wish to no longer receive your newsletter will unsubscribe instead of clicking on the spam button if given an obvious way to do so.
The majority of subscribers might think that by putting the unsubscribe button at the top of their newsletter will significantly reduce their list. The fact of the matter is, that people that wish to get off your list are going to do it one way or the other. By allowing your subscribers the option to unsubscribe, instead of clicking on the spam button, you will significantly increase your delivery rate for those users that are still interested in hearing from you.
If your subscriber doesn’t see an obvious and quick way to unsubscribe from your mailing, they will “unsubscribe by marking as spam.” Even if your email is legitimate, you might get marked as spam. You will find that by adding the unsubscribe link to the top of your newsletter you will have a much higher open rate and a much cleaner list.
